1. Hang your artwork on the wall

Ok, you have created your masterpiece. Now, photograph it for submission to a jury or gallery. The photograph iw the second piece of artwork and needs as much attention as your preferred medium.

Sounds simple, but hang the artwork on the wall. We regularly see artwork photographed leaned up against a wall and shot from a downward angle. Hang your work at a height where the middle of your piece will be parallel to where your camera will be—either on a tripod or resting sturdily on a table or other surface. This will prevent “keystoning” and is one less thing for you manipulate after taking the picture.

You want to set the piece so that the center of the camera lens is at the center of the artwork.

This problem is solved when you hang the work on a vertical wall and set the center of the camera perpendicular to the center of the artwork.

Tape an 18% grey card next to your artwork (leaving a bit of space for a border). This will allow for perfect color verification later. They can be purchased from any photography store.
